Background Information on the NSGIC Metadata Education and Research Project

As GIS/LIS are applied to an increasing assortment of environmental and development issues and spatial data sharing becomes more prevalent, the importance of documenting the content, quality, and lineage of spatial data becomes more important. Interest in metadata (data about data) is spreading beyond the domain of the federal government to other GIS user communities at the state and local government levels, as well as non-profit organizations and the private sector. A metadata content standard has been implemented, as have a variety of tools for metadata collection. Education about the use of the metadata standard and metadata tools is an important component of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.

The National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) was awarded a Federal Geographic Data Committee Competitive Cooperative Agreements Program (CCAP) award to undertake an educational and research program in support of content standards for digital geospatial metadata. The project consists of three phases: 1) case studies of metadata activities in nine NSGIC member states, 2) development of a WWW-based metadata primer: a practical overview of the issues associated with developing and maintaining digital geospatial metadata, and 3) a national metadata satellite videoconference.

Metadata Satellite Videoconference Registrations

The table in this section contains the registration contact persons for the satellite videoconference titled "A Practical Guide to Metadata Implementation for GIS/LIS Professionals" which aired on Wednesday, October 15, 1997 from 1pm to 3pm Central Daylight Time. There were a total of 109 downlink sites in 34 states and 3 Canadian provinces. Click for a map of downlink sites. An estimated 200 persons in Wisconsin attended the videoconference at 35 downlink sites in 33 counties. An estimated 1500 persons attended the videoconference outside Wisconsin at 74 downlink sites.

Misc. Notes

There were 15 sites in Minnesota coordinated by the Minnesota Land Management Information Center. For their locations, check the LMIC home page for the Satellite Videoconference.

There were seven sites in Oregon (Salem, Eugene, Medford, Portland, Klamath Falls, Bend, and LaGrande) coordinated by the State Service Center for GIS, the BLM, and Oregon Institute of Technology.

There were two sites in North Carolina (Raleigh and Dallas) coordinated by the N.C. Center for Geographic Inforamtion and Analysis.

There were three sites in Illinois (Chicago, Springfield, and Carbondale) coordinated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
