Soil map units (smu's) were digitized from paper soil surveys
compiled by the Soil Conservation Service in the late 1960s.
The original base maps are 1:15,840 aerial photographs which were
not corrected for displacement, tilt, or other errors common to
this type of media. Road intersections and other cultural features
were used as control in digitizing the maps. The individual map
sheets were joined to create a single coverage. Where lines did
not intersect, the maps were rubber-sheeted to maintain topology.
The soils are identified by the items "smu" and "soil"(name)
in the PAT. The item "smu" is used to relate the PAT
to related info files "woodsuit", "traillut"
and "capability". These relations are stored in the
relate table "soilcap". ("soilcap" should
be edited to include the correct path name under TABLE-ID). "Woodsuit"
lists ordination symbols and woodland classes for each smu. "Traillut"
lists the suitability of each smu for trail uses. "Capability"
lists the agricultural capability class, subclass, and unit for
each smu.
