A private individual, volunteering for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1996, used a Magellan GPS 4000 global positioning system unit to plot the location of horse trails at La Farge Project lands onto 7.5 minute USGS quad maps. The basic procedure was as follows: start at a known point on the quad map (i.e. road intersection); activate the GPS unit at this point; proceed along the trail route and periodically perform a GPS unit function which compares the previous position to the current position and calculates the map distance and direction of travel between the points; plot the information on the quad map; repeat the procedure throughout the remainder of the trail route. When the mapping was completed, the trail information was manually digitized from the quad map into a GRASS GIS.

The horse trails data set was sent from ACOE to LICGF as a GRASS file in DLG-3 Optional format (Digital Line Graph). At LICGF the data file was converted into Arc format using the "dlgarc" command, built as a line coverage, and projected into the Vernon County coordinate system.
