The Kickapoo River Valley is located in southwestern Wisconsin. For this Geographical Information System (GIS), the valley is defined as the watershed which drains into the Kickapoo River. The watershed covers approximately 800 square miles and runs through parts of four counties: Monroe, Vernon, Richland and Crawford. The main area for GIS development includes the Kickapoo Valley Reserve and the adjacent Wildcat Mountain State Park. Wildcat Mountain State Park is a 4000 acre park owned by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The 8600 acre Reserve is currently owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. However, the majority (7400 acres) of this land will be transferred to the State of Wisconsin. The remaining 1200 acres will become part of the Ho-Chunk Nation's trust land holdings. Several data layers which cover the entire watershed are also included in the GIS.
